Senior R&D Scientist

Location: On-Site
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: Competitive salary commensurate with experience and education

Who We are Looking for

We encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply, even if you do not meet every qualification listed below.

We are seeking a highly technical, hands-on cryogenic systems expert with demonstrated experience building dilution refrigerators and related ultra-low-temperature hardware. The ideal candidate understands the underlying thermodynamics as well as the mechanical, thermal, and integration constraints required to produce robust, repeatable systems.

This role reports directly to the R&D Lead and works closely with the broader R&D team, Production, Service, and other key technical stakeholders to ensure new designs are performant, manufacturable, and field-ready.

Experience with cryogenic heat switches, sintered powder heat exchangers, high-density RF wiring, and cryogenic vibration isolation is strongly valued.

What Will You Do

Working under the technical direction of the R&D Lead and in close collaboration with  other cross-functional stakeholders, you will contribute across the full lifecycle of ZPC’s cryogenic systems — from design refinement through production integration and field support.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborate with the R&D team to address complex thermal, mechanical, and integration challenges in dilution refrigerator systems.
  • Design and refine dilution refrigerators, cryostats, and ancillary cryogenic subsystems.
  • Improve cooling power, base temperature performance, and system stability through structured design iteration.
  • Lead cross-functional R&D projects to deliver customized sub-Kelvin systems, ensuring seamless transitions from customers’ experimental needs to robust, field-ready hardware.
  • Liaise directly with Production teams to resolve manufacturability constraints and improve repeatability of system builds.
  • Support the Service team in diagnosing and resolving field performance issues, including root cause analysis at millikelvin regimes.
  • Contribute to development and implementation of technical standards to improve reliability, documentation, and assembly consistency.
  • Participate in technical design reviews to ensure alignment between design intent and production execution.

Preferred Experience / Technical Skills

We are most interested in candidates with strong low-temperature physics fundamentals and applied systems engineering experience.

  • PhD or MSc in Physics, Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Direct experience building dilution refrigerators (not solely operating them).
  • Strong background in thermodynamics and heat transfer at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Experience with cryogenic heat exchangers and gas-gap heat switches.
  • Familiarity with superconducting magnet integration and cryogen-free platforms preferred.
  • Strong technical documentation and reporting discipline.
  • Passport and ability to pass security clearances for customer site installations if required.

Nice to Have / Considered an Asset

  • Finite element modelling for thermal, fluid or structural analysis.
  • Experience with high-density RF wiring in cryogenic environments.
  • Vibrational analysis using sensitive transducers
  • Experience transitioning prototype systems into structured production builds.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a multidisciplinary engineering team.

What Will You Bring

  • Deep technical curiosity and analytical rigor.
  • Systems-level thinking with attention to thermal, mechanical, and integration detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Commitment to precision, engineering discipline, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a growing, technically demanding organization.
  • Proven academic or industrial track record with strong references.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience and education
  • 100% employer-paid group benefits, including:
    • Health and dental
    • $750 annual Health Care Spending Account
    • Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP)
  • Flexible Paid Time Off policy
  • Paid statutory holidays
  • Employee-paid life insurance and long-term disability benefits
